On 6/15/2022, Joe Biden’s Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm went on a media blitz, appearing on several networks to address the high gas prices in the US. While she maintained that clean energy was still the end goal, she also stressed that oil and gas companies need to step up production in the short term. She was confronted about the pain at the pump during an appearance on CNN. Surprisingly, CNN pushed back. Granholm has a message to Americans suffering because of high gas prices: Brazilians pay the same amount for gas. Instead of offering up common sense solutions such as drilling for more oil here at home, Secretary Granholm said Americans should stop complaining because Canadians, Brazilians and Germans are paying the same amount for gas. On CNN’s New Day, John Berman pressed the secretary on the appearance of the conflicting agendas. “Do you — five years from now, ten years from now, are you telling me you want them drilling for more oil? You want the refineries putting out more gasoline in five or ten years?” Berman asked.
“What we’re saying is today we need that supply increased. Of course in five or ten years, actually in the immediate, we’re also pressing on the accelerator, if you will, to move toward clean energy, so we don’t have to be under the thumb of petro dictators like Putin or at the whim of the volatility of fossil fuels. Ultimately America will be most secure when we can rely upon our own clean domestic production of energy, through solar, through wind, through —“ “If you were in Brazil, you’d be paying the same amount for gas…” Granholm said. “We’re talking about the United States, though,” CNN’s John Berman said. Granholm says gas prices unsustainable, we must accelerate to clean energy.
