Bill Cosby Is Found Guilty of Sexual Assault
Update 9/25/2018: Bill Cosby was sentenced to three to 10 years in state prison for the sexual assault of Andrea Constand. “I’m not permitted to treat him any differently based on who he is or who he was,” said Judge Steven T. O’Neill. O’Neill also ruled that Cosby is a “sexually violent predator” and fined him $25,000.
Cosby’s publicist, Andrew Wyatt, delivered a bizarre condemnation of the verdict. Wyatt called Cosby’s trial that resulted in a conviction “the most racist and sexist trial in the history of the United States.” Wyatt went on to characterize the three psychologists who testified as “white women who make money off of accusing black men of being sexual predators.” Wyatt referenced the persecution of Jesus while talking about Cosby. “They persecuted Jesus and look what happened,” he said. “Not saying Mr. Cosby’s Jesus, but we know what this country has done to black men for centuries.” And it was the first time that Cosby’s team has made a connection to Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. “What is going on in Washington today with Judge Kavanaugh is part of that sex war that Judge O’Neill and his wife are a part of,” Wyatt said.
Original description:
Andrea Constand is the only woman among 62 accusers whose complaint against Bill Cosby has resulted in a conviction. A jury found him guilty of three counts of aggravated indecent assault for drugging and sexually assaulting Constand.
Outside the courtroom, reactions were understandably emotional.
“What was revealed through this investigation was a man who had spent decades preying on women that he drugged and sexually assaulted, and a man who evaded this moment right here far too long,” Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele told reporters.
Cosby’s attorney, Tom Mesereau, said that he is “not guilty of anything.” He said he plans to appeal very strongly, “We are very disappointed by the verdict. We don’t think Mr. Cosby’s guilty of anything and the fight is not over,” he said.
Cosby faces up to 10 years for each of the three felonies he was convicted of, but the judge could decide that he could serve any sentence concurrently.
During an interview on Good Morning America, Cosby’s publicists were asked if they believed all 60 women who had come forward were lying. “May I ask a question?” Cosby spokeswoman Ebonee Benson said. “Since when are all people honest? Since when are all women honest?”
Cosby’s defense team launched aggressive attacks on Constand’s credibility and said that their sexual interaction was consensual. Andrea Constand came out publicly in 2015 as a lesbian to challenge her attacker’s assertion that he knew how to read the desires of the women he assaulted.
