On 7/22/2024, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a progressive member of the Democratic Party grilled Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was praised by MAGA for her grilling of Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle.

Cheatle answered questions for around four hours from lawmakers, including why there were no Secret Service agents stationed on the roof where Thomas Matthew Crooks positioned himself to shoot at Trump during the rally.

Ocasio-Cortez asked Cheatle why the agency had set up a security perimeter which was shorter than a firing range of an AR-15 weapon. She also called the 60-day timeline in which Cheatle said a Secret Service report about the security breakdowns that led to the assassination attempt against Trump being released “not acceptable.”

“It’s very important to understand that this is not theater, this is not about jockeying. This is about the safety of some of the most highly targeted and valued targets, internationally and domestically, in the United States of America,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

“So the idea that a report will be finalized in 60 days, let alone prior to any actionable decisions that would be made, is simply not acceptable.” Ocasio-Cortez was among several Republican and Democratic lawmakers on the House Oversight Committee to call on Cheatle to resign from her position on Monday.

“Why was the Secret Service’s protective perimeter in Butler shorter than the range of an AR-15? It does not take 60 days to answer that question,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

“The agency’s failure to publicly account for these questions and others from Congress is unacceptable. Dir. Cheatle should resign.”
