GQ magazine released its special issue naming former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick “Citizen of the Year.” The controversial figure in sports, and the magazine, received a lot of backlash.

Kaepernick has said his decision to kneel during the national anthem began as a protest about police brutality in the black communities of America. Since then, it has ballooned into an issue about free speech, respect for the flag and respect for veterans.

Kaepernick has continued his protest, even after not being hired by any NFL team this season. In addition to the GQ cover he’s landed a $1 million book deal.

Colin Kaepernick inked a book deal worth just over $1 million with Random House imprint One World.

One World’s headed by book world superstar Chris Jackson, who also publishes Jay-Z and Ta-Nehisi Coates. He launched One World last year.

Kaepernick had been seen “taking meetings with publishers in the New York offices of WME” to shop the planned book. He’s repped as an athlete by agent Carlos Fleming.

Ex-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Kaepernick launched the current movement of NFL players protesting during the national anthem, and he’s recently filed a controversial collusion grievance against league owners. He’s still looking for a job in the NFL after opting out of his 49ers contract earlier this year.
