#shorts On 5/23/2023, a reporter asked White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, ” It sounds like the White House is now ruling out invoking the 14th Amendment as an option to get around the debt ceiling. Is that accurate?
KJP: What I can say: It is not — it is not — it is not going to fix the current problem that we have right now, which — Right now, what we — what is going to deal with getting the debt limit done is for Congress — for Congress to act. And that’s what we’ve been very clear on.
Reporter: So, if it won’t fix the current problem, that means that’s not a possibility that the President will pursue.
KJP: I mean — I — look, I — look, I — I’m not going to go beyond what the President has said. He has — he’s made it very clear: It’s not going to solve our problems. That is — that is just where we are. Congress needs to do its job.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre threw cold water on the view that the 14th Amendment could resolve Washington’s debt-ceiling standoff. “It is not going to fix the current problem that we have right now,” she told reporters during a press briefing, after being asked if the Biden White House has ruled out using the amendment. On Sunday, President Joe Biden offered a similar view, saying he believes he has the authority to invoke the 14th Amendment, but it may be too late to go that route.
