On 1/31/2024, The White House announced that Biden will travel to East Palestine sometime in February “to meet with residents impacted by the Norfolk Southern train derailment, discuss Federal support to the community, and hold Norfolk Southern accountable.” Biden was heavily criticized at the time of the incident for never visiting the community in the weeks and months that followed. The decision to finally visit East Palestine, Ohio looks an awful lot like a campaign stop. After promising to visit East Palestine, Ohio, for a year, the White House announced Wednesday that Biden would finally make a trip to visit the community to meet with residents and local officials. While the White House said an invite from East Palestine Mayor Trent Conaway played into the decision to visit the community.
In September, Biden insisted he hadn’t had the time to go to East Palestine, saying, “I haven’t had the occasion to go to East Palestine. There’s a lot going on.” He had just spent much of August on vacation.
It’s been one year since the toxic train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio.
