Not in recession & redefine recession or say not to define recession but deny redefining recession

On 7/28/2022, Joe Biden delivered remarks on the ‘Inflation Reduction Act of 2022’ from the State Dining Room of the White House. Biden also addressed the 2nd quarter GDP numbers that came it at negative 0.9% after the GDP shrank by 1.6 percent in the first quarter of 2022, “Chairman Powell and many of the um, uh, significant banking personnel and economists say we’re not in a recession,” Biden said.

In a flashback from 2000, former President Bill Clinton said “a recession is two quarters in a row of negative growth,” during his meeting with President-elect George W. Bush in the White House on 12/19/2000.

On 7/28/2022, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said “we are in a transition” when asked about a recession.

On 7/28/2022, Fox News reported that President Joe Biden’s own economic advisors have defined a recession as two quarters of negative growth, during a segment on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom” with Dana Perino and Bill Hemmer.

On 7/27/2022, Former Hillary Clinton advisor Doug Hattaway said Democrats don’t know how to make the economy work for working people, during a segment on CNN’s “The Lead” with Jake Tapper.

On 7/27/2022, during press conference, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked, “And just ahead of tomorrow, given there is so much talk about “is there, is there not a recession” — I asked this other day; I just want to follow up: Is there a White House definition of what a recession looks like?”

JEAN-PIERRE: We — we have — we have — have talked about the — the National Bureau of Economic Research. They have the textbook definition of what that looks like. They look at it more broadly, as I just laid out. And so that’s what we would point you to.

Reporter: We are hearing from companies like Walmart and Target who are starting to say that, you know, they’re seeing how inflation is impacting their customers. And there are a lot of Americans who, even though you may say that you don’t — we’re not in a recession now, that’s not how it feels to them. You know, what is your message to those consumers, those Americans who very much feel that we are in one?

JEAN-PIERRE: Yeah, and we have said this before: We understand what a — what the American people are going through. We — we feel that. We understand that. That is something that the President personally understands. We see that the gas prices and the — and what they’re dealing with at the pump is — is costing families.

Reporter: in Europe, they are talking about conserving natural gas for fear of Russia cutting off supplies this winter. They’re developing these plans.

MR. KIRBY: Yeah.

Reporter: Where do things stand with U.S. efforts or global efforts to supply alternative sources —

MR. KIRBY: Yeah.

Reporter: of natural gas? I realize it’s August and it’s a million degrees, but it will be winter soon.

MR. KIRBY: It’s a million degrees in here too. (Laughter.) Yeah, I — I think you know — I think Karine has talked to you about the task force that the President stood up to work with suppliers and distributors around the world to see if we can’t find alternative sources for natural gas and, frankly, for oil for our European allies and partners. And that work continues.
