On 8/12/2022, Representative Michael Turner of Ohio, the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee stressed that he did not know what documents Trump might have had. But in response to a reporter’s question, he offered some speculation. ‘’I can tell you that there are a number of things that are classified that fall under the umbrella of nuclear weapons, but that are not necessarily things that are truly classified,’’ Turner said. ‘’Many of them you can find on your own phone as we stand here. And if they fall within that category, they’re not an imminent national security threat that would rise to the level of you have to raid Donald Trump’s home and spend nine hours there.’’
Mike Turner is demanding to know the basis of the national security threat that lead to the FBI raid of Donald Trump’s home. Turner said Trump “has more classified information in his head than he does in his desk.” The Justice Department, however, claimed there was an “immediate” need to enter his residence. “We are demanding disclosure to this Committee what was the national security basis that was an apparent immediate threat that required this action as opposed to all the actions they could have taken,” Turner said during the news conference. Amid reports of possible documents concerning nuclear weapons at Trump’s home, Turner said “it depends on what the nuclear information is. You can say nuclear weapons, but there are things that are highly, highly classified,” he said. “There are things that are not extremely classified, but are, nonetheless, classified.”
He said there is a “number of things that fall under the umbrella of nuclear weapons” that not necessarily “truly classified” and are, therefore, not a national security threat that would justify the FBI raid. Turner said that if these documents rise to the level of national security threats warranting the immediate need to enter Trump’s home, “just tell us.” He called on U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBI Director Chris Wray to come before the Committee to disclose the “rational answers” for the raid and the national security threat.
Speaking alongside Turner, Representative Elise Stefanik, Republican of New York, the number-three Republican in the House leadership, called the FBI search a ‘’complete abuse and overreach of its authority’’ and claims that the agency protected Hillary Clinton, former FBI director James Comey, and Hunter Biden, President Biden’s son. She joined her colleagues on the House Permanent Select Committee for Intelligence to discuss the political weaponization of the FBI and DOJ and called for an immediate investigation into the FBI. “House Republicans are committed to immediate oversight, accountability and a fulsome investigation to provide needed transparency and answers to the American people regarding Joe Biden and his Administration’s weaponization of the Department of Justice and FBI against Joe Biden’s political opponent. President Donald Trump is Joe Biden’s most likely political opponent in 2024, and this is less than 100 days from critical midterm elections. The FBI raid of President Trump is a complete abuse and overreach of its authority. And as the American people know, unfortunately, this is the same agency leadership that protected Hillary Clinton, James Comey, and continues to protect Hunter Biden. The same leadership that perpetuated the false Russia hoax for years.
… But the American people are smart, they have had enough. It is unfortunately why there is a fundamental lack of trust in these agencies, and the American people deserve answers. A House Republican majority will leave no stone unturned when it comes to transparency and accountability into the brazen politicization of Joe Biden’s DOJ and FBI targeting their political opponents.
