On 6/14/2022, The president addressed members of the largest federation of unions in the country from inside the Pennsylvania Convention Center, showing his support for organized labor. His visit comes amid mounting issues for the U.S. economy, as inflation hits a four-decade high of 8.6 percent. Joe Biden spoke at the AFL-CIO labor union convention in Philadelphia where he defended his abysmal economic track record and attacked the “MAGA agenda.” Biden said he believes in “bipartisanship,” then insulted “the MAGA party.” “Look, I believe in bipartisanship but I have no illusions about this Republican party and the MAGA party. I’ve been able to bring some Republicans along on parts of my plan, but the fact is there’s Republicans in Congress that are still in the grip of the ultra MAGA agenda,” said Biden.
“I don’t want to hear any more of these lies about reckless spending. We are changing people’s lives,” Biden said, saying multiple times that he was cutting deficits in contrast to his predecessor Donald Trump. The Congressional Budget Office last month forecast that the U.S. budget deficit would shrink dramatically to $1.036 trillion for fiscal year 2022 from $2.775 trillion last year given a recovery-fueled surge in revenues and lower outlays. Many times in recent speeches, Biden has been misleadingly taking credit for cutting federal deficits by historic amounts, though most of the reduction in deficits is the result of expiring emergency spending. Deficits fell between fiscal year 2020 and 2021 far less than initially projected after Biden added to them with more spending.
Joe Biden downplayed inflation and said other countries have it worse. “We’ve made extraordinary progress and put America in a position to tackle the worldwide problem that is worse everywhere but here, inflation!” Biden said. Biden repeated the same talking points:
* Republicans want to raise taxes
* Biden discussed the price of gas at the dinner table when he was a child (gas prices were flat his entire childhood
* Americans have more savings now (they don’t – Americans have an average of $9,000 less in savings now)
* Biden claimed wages have gone up (inflation has outpaced wages)
Often raising his voice to a yell, Biden vowed to continue to pursue billionaires and corporations that his administration says underpay billions of dollars in taxes each year, and to pursue economic policies aimed at shrinking U.S. inequality. Biden says the GOP is focused on cutting taxes for companies and the wealthy, “Republicans have it all backwards: Their plan literally calls for increasing taxes on middle class and working people and cutting taxes on corporations and wealthy Americans,” Biden said. “I believe in bipartisanship, but I have no illusions about this Republican Party, the MAGA party.” Republicans argue that their 2017 tax overhaul created a firmer base for growth by reducing corporate tax rates, making U.S. companies more competitive. They say enabling companies and individuals to hold on to more of what they earn will boost growth, while Biden counters that laws enabling unionization and boosting child care benefits for families will lead to growth through a stronger middle class.
Biden trashed Trump’s “America First” agenda in his speech to 2,000 union members and state officials. He brings up “long lines of cars” waiting for food, which is happening today on his watch, “Talk about a contrast. Ordinary people waiting in line for an hour for a box of food,” while presidential policies created more billionaires than ever in American history, he said. Biden tells unintelligible story about a guy who told him to “fix Detroit”. He claims wages have gone up, but real wages are down in the Biden economy. He claims Americans “have more savings nationwide,” but the opposite is true. He said, “I don’t wanna hear any more of these lies about reckless spending”. He says “we’ve made extraordinary progress” in his economy, which just isn’t true.
