Biden called codify Roe & end filibuster, blamed Russia prices. Gaffe mixes up Switzerland & Sweden

On 6/30/2022, during a rare press conference on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Spain, Joe Biden repeatedly referenced pre-determined list of reporters he was instructed to call on, he called on only four reporters whose names were on a prepared list and hastily ended a press conference, turning his back as reporters shouted questions and declaring, “I’m out of here.” Biden answered several questions from a pre-determined list of reporters during a press conference in Madrid, Spain, following the NATO Summit before he said, “All right, guys,” and attempted to wrap things up. ‘I’m supposed to go down the list here,’ said Biden as he called on Jim Tankersley of the New York Times. Multiple reporters still wanted to ask questions, and someone in the crowd promised to be quick, but Biden shut it down nonetheless. “There’s no such thing as a quick one. I’m out of here,” Biden said as he walked away from the podium as numerous reporters had their hands raised. He looks confused and asked: “Which Way Am I Going?”

Biden repeatedly referenced a pre-determined list of reporters he was instructed to call on. “I’ll be happy to take your questions, and the first question, I’m told, is Darlene Superville from The Associated Press,” he said to begin the question-and-answer portion as he read off a piece of paper. He went on to reference the paper several times when calling on reporters.

Biden said he would support Congress ending the filibuster, he said that the only solution is to codify Roe v. Wade in Congress. He originally supported keeping the Senate filibuster when he entered office. “…The one thing that has been destabilizing is the outrageous behavior of the Supreme Court of the United States on overruling, not only Roe v. Wade, but essentially challenging the right to privacy. We’ve been a leader in the world in terms of personal rights, and privacy rights, and it is a mistake, in my view, for the Supreme Court to do what it did… “The foremost thing we should do is make it clear how outrageous this decision was,” Biden said. “I believe we have to codify Roe v. Wade in the law, and the way to do that is to make sure that Congress votes to do that. And if the filibuster gets in the way, it’s like voting rights, we should require an exception to the filibuster for this action.” Biden had previously called on Congress to codify Roe following the Supreme Court’s ruling on Friday, but he had not called for ending the filibuster.

Biden caught himself in the act of an embarrassing gaffe, mistakenly saying neutral Switzerland was joining NATO – rather than Sweden. He quickly recovered, joking that he must be getting anxious about the process of expanding the alliance. First came a call from the leader Finland, asking to visit the White House. ‘We got the telephone … he suggested we call the leader of Switzerland … ‘ he said before realizing his mistake. ‘Switzerland, my goodness, I’m getting really anxious here about expanding NATO. ‘Sweden.’

Biden said that he will not request Saudi leaders to increase oil production during his trip to Saudi Arabia next month, stressing that is “not the purpose of the trip,” while blaming sky-high gas prices in the United States on “Russia, Russia, Russia.” Biden was asked whether he will ask the crown prince of the king of Saudi Arabia during his trip next month to increase oil production, as Americans continue to feel the pain at the pump. When pressed on whether he would ask for increased oil production from Saudi leaders, Biden said: “No. That’s the all the Gulf states meeting. I indicated to them that I thought they should be increasing oil production, generically, not to the Saudis particularly,” Biden said. “And I think we’re going to—I hope we see them and their own interests concluding that makes sense to do.”

Biden again placed blame on Russia for the rising gas prices in the U.S. The president laid out the actions he has taken to address the skyrocketing prices of fuel, including releasing a million barrels of oil per day from the U.S. oil reserve, in addition to his efforts to get other nations to remove a total of 240 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The president added that he has asked Congress to temporarily end the tax on gasoline at the pump, and asked states to do the same. “The bottom line is, ultimately, the reason why gas prices are up is because of Russia, Russia, Russia. The reason why the food crisis exists is because of Russia, Russia …”
