On 1/27/2023, a reporter asked White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, “People on the Hill are talking about a debt limit extension until September. Would the White House support such an extension?”
MS. JEAN-PIERRE: Look, we’ve been very clear that the debt limit should be dealt with without conditions. We’ve been very, very clear on that, and we continue to make that clear … So we’re seeing a growing economy. We’re seeing record unemployment, 50-year low. We’re seeing almost 11 jobs created under this President. What we should be doing and what Congress should be working with us on is how do we continue to build on that success, not do political stunts.
Reporter: Haiti has gone through another tough week. I know you were questioned earlier this week. But we heard Helen La Lime at the U.N. Security Council talk about it.
MS. JEAN-PIERRE: … During their bilat, President Biden with Prime Minister Trudeau also committed to continue coordination with partners on the U.S. Security Council on the next steps to support stability to Haiti

On 1/23/2023, a reporter asked White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, “I wanted to ask about — the President of Turkey today so that he would not support Sweden’s bid to join NATO. Obviously, the U.S. supports that. Is there concern that that bid could fall through?
MS. JEAN-PIERRE: So, just a couple of things that I want to make sure — I want to echo the comments of the Swedish Prime Minister, who said, “Burning books that are holy to many is a deeply respectful act,” and “what is legal is not necessarily appropriate.” As we have said before, Finland and Sweden are ready to be NATO Allies … overwhelming bipartisan vote for their membership just weeks after their application was submitted.
Reporter: And just checking, did you mean “disrespectful” or “respectful”?
MS. JEAN-PIERRE: Disrespectful act.
Reporter: Okay. Just making sure.
MS. JEAN-PIERRE: Thank you for the clarity. “Deeply disrespectful act.”
Reporter: — from last week.
MS. JEAN-PIERRE: I understand. And I said I’m not going to go beyond what the President said, and I think it speaks for — speaks for itself. I’m not going to go into what he meant or didn’t meant. He laid it out. He said it to all of you when he was
On 1/25/2023, John Kirby (former Pentagon spox) came into the press briefing room to do Karine Jean-Pierre’s job for her. John Kirby actually answered some questions and some fun.
MS. JEAN-PIERRE: James, in the back.
Q I’m sorry, I didn’t have a question.
MS. JEAN-PIERRE: Oh, okay.
Q I — I have a question —
Q Karine —
Q Thank you. Thank you, Karine.
MR. KIRBY: Wait, wait, wait. You don’t have a question, James? Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me? (Laughter.)
Q This is just a tribute to the —
MS. JEAN-PIERRE: Can we just have this for the record —
MR. KIRBY: Oh, my goodness. Yes.
MS. JEAN-PIERRE: Can we have it for the record that I called on you and you didn’t have a question?
MR. KIRBY: I’m going to frame that transcript.
MS. JEAN-PIERRE: For the record.
MR. KIRBY: Holy mackerel.
MS. JEAN-PIERRE: Go ahead. Go ahead.
Q This is simply a tribute to your own loquacity and thoroughness in briefing us today.
MR. KIRBY: “Loquacity” is James Rosen for “eloquence”? Is that —
Q I have two questions for you.
Q Thank you, Karine. Hi, John. Actually, Phil asked my question, but —
MR. KIRBY: Oh, good. So, we can go to the next one. (Laughter.)
Q No, no, I have a follow-up on that.
