Democrats’ reckless spending Bill on Xmas Eve after election & refused to take responsibility

On 12/14/2022, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik released the following statement on House Democrats’ failure to responsibly pass a government spending bill, instead punting a one-week Continuing Resolution of the existing government spending to buy time to pass their Far Left wish list.

“House Democrats have failed to govern. One-party Democrat rule in Washington has increased the price of almost everything for every hardworking family and created the most expensive Christmas in history. At the final hour, Lame Duck Democrats are failing to responsibly keep the government running in pursuit of their radical agenda. From the beginning, Democrats have cut House Republicans out of negotiations to attempt one more Far Left radical spending package before they lose power. I will reject the Far Left’s wish list that pushes trillions of taxpayer dollars to fund their radical agenda and, on day one in the Republican majority, am committed to reining in Democrats’ reckless spending and failed policies.”

Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said at a press conference “We’re 20 days before the new members are being sworn in. We’ve got two members leading appropriations in the Senate who will no longer be here or be able to be held accountable to the constituents.” He was referring to Sens. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., and Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., negotiating what will be in the omnibus, despite the fact that they will be leaving office next month.

“The majority right now … wants to put a small continuing resolution to bump all the members up two days before Christmas, to try to vote on a package they cannot read, written by two individuals who will not be here on spending for the entire government. The Democrats have been in power. They’ve had the House, the Senate, and the presidency. They did not do their work, but they should not jam us now. They should not jam the American public. We cannot afford it.”

“It’s still not even available for anyone to read, and yet they want the ability to go and bring that on the eve of Christmas, because it’s a sign that Congress failed to do its job. The Democrat House, the Democrat Senate, the Democrat White House had all year to get funding taken care of by Sept. 30, and of course they blew through that deadline and asked for another few months. In fact, in the first 20 months of President Joe Biden, he has added more than $10 trillion in new spending. That is a record for any president in his first 20 months [in office] in the history of the United States. It’s also the largest debt increase by any president in his first 20 months in the history of the United States.”

On 12/14/2022, House Republican Whip Steve Scalise speaks at a press conference on the omnibus spending bill. Whip Scalise highlighted how President Biden and Speaker Pelosi have refused to take responsibility for their fiscally irresponsible agenda and have waited until the last minute to fund the government. In addition, Whip Scalise called out Democrats for attempting to hide what is in their spending bill and emphasized the need to hold them accountable for the trillions of dollars they’ve spent. “We need to change the way Washington does business. In fact, we ran on an agenda of changing the way Washington does business. And, right after that election, where the American people said that they want a check and a balance on the Biden Administration, where they want to change leadership in the House, we see Washington trying to do that same business one last time, right before Christmas, by bringing this omnibus appropriations bill that nobody has seen. As [Leader McCarthy] pointed out, just a handful of people – at most – are writing it right now. It’s still not even available for anyone to read. And yet, they want the ability to go and bring that on the eve of Christmas because it’s a sign that Congress failed to do its job.

“The Democrat House, the Democrat Senate, the Democrat White House, had all year to get funding taken care of by September 30th. And, of course, they blew through that deadline and asked for another few months right before the election. They surely didn’t want to be accountable for what they knew they were going to do, so they kicked the can again ‘til after the election.

“And in fact, we whipped against that bill because we knew that was their intention – to bring a big massive spending bill after the election is over because they didn’t want the American people to see all of the money that they were going to be spending on pet projects, on things that have nothing to do with getting our economy back on track, [and] focusing on the problems that are crushing hardworking families all across America. And that’s why we oppose this process.

“We have to make Congress be more accountable. We have to make Congress do its job
