Biden intends to run for reelection in 2024, laughed off question; Biden not migrant with DeSantis

On 10/4/2022, during the President Joe Biden White House press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre laughed off question on whether President Joe Biden will run for re-election in 2024. In response to a question about a report that President Biden told the Rev. Al Sharpton that he would seek reelection in 2024, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre repeated that Biden intends to run again, but made no formal declaration. A reporter asked, “Did the president tell Al Sharpton he’s running?”

Jean-Pierre: [LAUGHS] clearly, You love asking me, Sebastian, you love asking me about 2024.
Reporter: Well, [INAUDIBLE] Twitter. He said–
Jean-Pierre: Look, I–
Reporter: He said, hey all, I’m running.
Jean-Pierre: Here’s what I will say– [LAUGHS]
Reporter: I just want your answer, you know? Everyone–

Jean-Pierre: I know you want a clear answer. I know, but he’s– [LAUGHS] If Al Sharpton says it, it’s you know– look, I– [LAUGHS] It’s so funny. You always ask me about 2024. So here’s what I can say, and the President has said this himself, he intends to run in 2024. As you know, I cannot weigh in on elections. I cannot speak to elections from here. We do truly follow and try to follow the Hatch Act here. But I will just reiterate what the President has said many times, what I have said many times, is that the President intends to run.

In a private conversation last month, President Joe Biden confided in MSNBC’s Rev. Al Sharpton, informing him of his intention to run for reelection in 2024. “I’m going to do it again … I’m going,” Biden allegedly said on September 2 in the Roosevelt Room of the White House. This confidential admission, which Sharpton reportedly broadcast to his National Action Network staff immediately after the meeting, comes amid much uncertainty whether the president should or would seek to hold on to power. Sharpton suggested that the recent meeting paralleled another, in January 2019, during which Biden allegedly solicited his advice on whether to pursue the highest office in the land.

Also Jean-Pierre said that President Biden will be briefed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis when he visits Fort Myers Wednesday to survey damage inflicted by Hurricane Ian. Jean-Pierre said the Republican governor will be joined by FEMA administrator Deanne Criswell and other state and local officials who will “provide the President with an operational briefing on the current response and recovery efforts.” Jean-Pierre previewed the trip saying that Biden will travel to Fort Myers to “reaffirm his commitment to supporting the people of Florida as they recover and rebuild from the devastating storm.”

Jean-Pierre and others have repeatedly downplayed any tension between Biden and DeSantis or whether other political disagreements would overshadow a meeting on Wednesday, weary of shifting attention away from the hurricane response. Biden and DeSantis have spoken three times over the phone to coordinate on storm response efforts in the past week, and the two have projected an aura of cooperation and professionalism publicly. The White House has sparred with DeSantis over his decision to fly migrants from Texas to Massachusetts. Jean-Pierre said although the president continues to disagree with DeSantis’ decision to send migrants on a plane to Martha’s Vineyard last month, he will not be discussing the matter with him on Wednesday. “There will be plenty of times to discuss differences between the president and the governor,” she told reporters. “Now is not the time.”
