HYGONews Week’s Most Popular Stories 5/8, WH refused to condemn SCOTUS leak, GOP grill Disinfo Board

On 5/8/2022, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi admitted the Democrats are focused on working to change the Supreme Court’s draft decision on Roe v Wade, “If I just may, the focus we have right now is an urgent one in order to try to improve this uh what are we calling it fake or draft decision… whatever it is.” “In 2009 we did not have a pro-choice Democratic party…” Pelosi said. “Right now we do have a pro-choice Democratic Congress and we passed the law months ago.”

On 5/5/2022 White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki refused to condemn a left-wing group that doxxed conservative Supreme Court justices after a draft opinion leak revealed the highest court of the land is set to strike down Roe v Wade. Far-left group “Ruth Sent Us” doxxed the home address of the six conservative justices of the US Supreme Court. Fox News reporter Peter Doocy asked Psaki if Biden approves of the doxxing. “Activists posted a map with the home addresses of the Supreme Court justices. Is that kind of thing this president wants?” Fox News’ Peter Doocy asked Psaki. “Look, I think the President’s view is that there is a lot of passion, … about what they saw in that leaked document,” Psaki said. Doocy pressed Psaki and asked her if she thinks it’s okay if left-wing protesters show up to private homes. “I don’t have an official U.S. government position on where people protest,” Psaki said.

On 5/4/2022, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., challenged Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his department’s newly-announced Disinformation Governance Board, asserting that the American people do not need the federal government to tell them what the truth is. “Do you know, the greatest propagator of disinformation in the history of the world is? The U.S. government,” Paul said. “Are you familiar with McNamara? The Pentagon Papers? Are you familiar with George W. Bush and the weapons of mass destruction? Are you familiar with Iran-contra?”

“I mean, think of all the debates and disputes we’ve had over the last 50 years in our country,” Paul continued. “We worked them out by debating them. We don’t work them out by the government being the arbiter. I don’t want guardrails. I want you to have nothing to do with speech. You think we can’t determine, you know, speech by traffickers is disinformation. Do you think the American people are so stupid they need you to tell them what the truth is? You can’t even admit what the truth is with the Steele dossier. I don’t trust government to figure out what the truth is. Government is largely disseminating disinformation.”

Mayorkas explained of the newly formed DHS Disinformation Governance Board, ‘What this working group does is ensure that there are guardrails, definitions, standards to make sure that free speech rights, civil rights, civil liberties and privacy rights of individuals are not impeded.’ ‘I don’t want guardrails. I want you to have nothing to do with speech,’ senator Paul tore into Mayorkas. ‘You think we can’t determine, you know, speech by traffickers is disinformation.’

Paul specifically pointed to claims that he has made about masks that have not been in line with administration policies. “I’ve said a million times that cloth masks don’t work. YouTube takes me down. They’re a private company I can have that beef with him. What about you? You’re going to look at that? … Are you going to put information out there saying that I’m spreading disinformation?” Paul asked.

Mayorkas refused to give a straight answer, claiming the board is not composed of ‘public health experts.’ “So public health won’t be part of the Disinformation Governance Board? No COVID disinformation? Yes or no?” Paul pressed. Mayorkas would not answer, claiming that Paul was giving him “vague” hypothetical situations. Paul claimed that his examples were “very specific.”

On 5/4/2022, Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana directed the question at Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas during a hearing held by the Senate Appropriations Committee. Senator Kennedy asked Mayorkas about Nina Jankowicz, who was chosen to serve as the board’s executive director, “When the department picked her, did they know that she said that Mr. Hunter Biden’s laptop is Russian disinformation?” Mayorkas replied, “I was not aware of that. We do not discuss the internal hiring process. Ultimately as the secretary, I’m responsible for the decisions of the Department of Homeland Security.”
