Nancy Pelosi’s words from 1998 about the impeachment of former President Bill Clinton and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy responded to Pelosi’s decision to move forward with articles of impeachment against Trump.
In 2019, when Speaker Nancy Pelosi was accused by a reporter of hating Trump, “I don’t hate the President,” said Speaker Nancy Pelosi. “I pray for the President all the time. So don’t mess with me when it comes to words like that.”
“Today, the Republican majority is not judging the president with fairness, but impeaching him with a vengeance,” Pelosi said on December 18, 1998. “In the investigation of the president, fundamental principles which Americans hold dear — privacy, fairness, checks and balances — have been seriously violated. And why Because we are here today because the Republicans in the House are paralyzed with hatred of President Clinton. And until the Republicans free themselves of this hatred, our country will suffer.”

Dec. 5, 2019. After Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that Judiciary Committee will move forward with articles of impeachment, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy responded that House Democrats are operating on a predetermined timeline and outcome for impeachment. “Today with the speaker’s announcement she has weakened the nation…This is the day that Hamilton feared and warned of. It’s not a day that history will be proud of. That was their goal from the very beginning,” McCarthy said.
When a reporter asked: “I gather you were watching just now when the Speaker, in rather effusive terms, denied that there is any personal animus on her part that is motivating the impeachment drive. Rep. Collins has suggested as much in a hearing yesterday when he intimated that the Democrats are simply impeaching President Trump ‘because they don’t like the guy.’ You also heard the Speaker invoke her Catholicism. Do you believe the Speaker at her word? Do you believe she is telling the truth when she says she does not hate the President and this is not what this is about.”
McCarthy replied: “I’ll take them at their word what Congresswoman Tlaib said their very first day in Congress [“Impeach the Motherf*cker”] of what she referred to the President, which I wouldn’t think anyone would want it referred to them, that she was going to impeach them. Or when Adam Schiff lied to the American public, only to get to the point where they are today. Or when he said he was going to ‘send him back to the golden throne.’”
“I’ll take the Speaker at her word, but if she paused for a moment, if she looked at just the facts, she would not have made that determination. If she paused and actually listened to the hearing yesterday, and what a Democrat who did not vote for the President, who has studied the Constitution, who has been a witness for Democrats and Republicans based upon his own ability as a scholar, that this is the weakest and thinnest impeachment in the history of America. There is no bribery, no extortion, no obstruction of justice, and no abuse of power. I think I have a hard time believing her.”
