Kamala Harris eulogized President Jimmy Carter: “May his life be a lesson for the ages and a beacon for the future. May God bless Jimmy Carter. Vice President Kamala Harris eulogized former President Jimmy Carter on Tuesday at the U.S. Capitol in Washington DC, where Carter lay in state, remembering him as a leader who was “ahead of his time”
On 1/7/2025, Vice President Kamala Harris gave a eulogy honoring President Jimmy Carter, calling the Georgia Democrat a “gifted man who also walk[ed] with humility, modesty and grace.” “Recall the stories from the 1976 campaign about how he slept in the homes of his supporters to share a meal with them at their table, and to listen to what was on their minds,” Harris said. “James Earl Carter Jr. loved our country. He lived his faith, he served the people, and he left the world better than he found it,” she said. “And in the end, Jimmy Carter’s work and those works speak for him louder than any tribute we can offer. May his life be a lesson for the ages and a beacon for the future.”
In addition to mentioning his accomplishments, including The Carter Center and establishing the Department of Education, Harris also listed his achievements in bringing diversity to the White House. As Harris explained, from 1977 to 1981, Carter “appointed more Black Americans to the federal bench than all of his predecessors combined, and appointed five times as many women.”
Harris commended Carter for retaining “a fundamental decency and humility” throughout his life, and said that he “left the world better than he found it.” “May his life be a lesson for the ages and a beacon for the future,” Harris concluded. “May God bless President Jimmy Carter, and may God bless the United States of America.”
