On 7/30/2024, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre denied an implication by reporters that President Joe Biden’s use of the term “threat to democracy” to describe former President Donald Trump led to the attempt on his life. Biden repeatedly used the term to describe his political opponent throughout his now-defunct presidential campaign. These words, Jean-Pierre said, played no part in the actions of the shooter in Butler, Pennsylvania. Jean-Pierre said, invoking the attack on the husband of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D- Calif. and other instances of political violence throughout the past four years. Biden, she said, has always spoken out against such occurrences. “I talked about Charlottesville, we talked about how the president spoke against January 6,” she said. “He condemned that, he condemned the political violence.”
