Gaetz threatened to remove McCarthy: either total compliance or remove you to vacate the chair

On 9/12/2023, Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) threatened to remove Speaker McCarthy for being out of compliance with the agreement that allowed him to assume his role. “On this very floor in January, the whole world witnessed a historic contest for House Speaker,” Gaetz said in his opening remarks. Under new House rules, it only takes one member of Congress, from either party, to bring a ‘motion to vacate’ which forces a vote on removing the Speaker of the House. It would only take a simple majority vote to remove McCarthy. Gaetz this week floated recruiting Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell to help him remove McCarthy.

Speaker McCarthy on Tuesday announced he is directing House committees to open an impeachment inquiry against Joe Biden. Gaetz wasn’t impressed. He took to the House floor to air his grievances on McCarthy’s failure to keep his end of the bargain. “I rise today to serve notice. Mr. Speaker, you are out of compliance with the agreement that allowed you to assume this role. The path forward for the House of Representatives is to either bring you into immediate total compliance or remove you, pursuant to a motion to vacate the chair.” Gaetz said from the House floor. “Moments ago, Speaker McCarthy endorsed an impeachment inquiry. This is a baby step following weeks of pressure from House conservatives to do more. We must move faster,” Gaetz said on the House floor.

Rep. Gaetz lambasted McCarthy for not holding a vote on term limits … insufficient accountability for the Biden Crime Family and for advancing Biden’s spending. Gaetz continued, “If Democrats bail out McCarthy – I will lead the resistance to this uni-party and the Biden/McCarthy/Jeffries government that they are attempting to build.”

“No continuing resolutions, individual spending bills, votes on balanced budgets and term limits,” Gaetz warned. “Subpoenas for Hunter Biden and the members of the Biden family. Impeach Joe Biden. Do these things or face a motion to vacate the chair.” McCarthy has indicated he supports a continuing resolution to forestall a government shutdown by the month’s end. Gaetz acknowledged that reality in his floor speech. “There is no way to pass all the appropriations bills now,” Gaetz conceded. “And it’s not like we didn’t know when Sept. 30 was going to show up on the calendar.”

“Mr. Speaker, dust off our written January agreement. You have a copy. Reflect on the spirit of that agreement and build on the start that we had moments ago, begin to comply,” he said. “No continuing resolutions, individual spending bills or bust, votes on balanced budgets and term limits, subpoenas for Hunter Biden and members of the Biden family who have been grifting off of this country and the impeachment for Joe Biden that he so richly deserves.” “Do these things or race a motion to vacate the chair,” he added.

In January, Gaetz was one of several GOP detractors who voted against McCarthy’s speakership at the beginning of the 118th Congress. Gaetz nominated and voted for Trump several times during the marathon 15 rounds of votes for speaker before voting “present” in the final tally that allowed McCarthy to cinch the role.

Many of McCarthy’s detractors rallied around him in exchange for concessions, some of which were never disclosed. “Mr. Speaker, dust off our written January agreement. You have a copy. Reflect on the spirit of that agreement and build on the start that we had moments ago. Begin to comply,” Gaetz said Tuesday.

“I know that Washington isn’t a town where people are known for keeping their word, well Speaker McCarthy, I am here to hold you to yours,” he added.
